Lesson 8 - Forehand_serve – description
Learning how to serve with a forehand is an important skill for kids starting out in table tennis. The serve is the starting point of every point, and it's essential to understand the proper technique and rules to serve effectively. To begin, kids should stand with their feet shoulder-width apart, facing the table.
They should hold the racket comfortably in their hand, with a grip that feels natural to them. When serving with a forehand, kids should start by tossing the ball with their non-racket hand to a height of about six inches. As the ball descends, they should use their racket to make contact with the ball on its way down, just above the table surface. During the serve, kids should focus on generating spin and accuracy.
They can experiment with different types of spins, such as topspin or sidespin, to make the serve more challenging for their opponents. It's important to keep the serve low over the net and aim for the desired location on the opponent's side of the table. To comply with the rules, kids should ensure that their free hand and the ball are behind the end line of the table during the serve.
They should also make sure that the ball is tossed vertically and not moved horizontally before hitting it. A coach or instructor can provide guidance on proper serving technique and offer tips on how to improve spin, speed, and placement. They can also explain the rules related to serving, including the number of times the ball must be tossed for a legal serve and the consequences of serving incorrectly.
Practicing serving with a forehand regularly will help kids develop consistency, control, and accuracy. They can experiment with different serves, strategies, and placements to keep their opponents guessing and gain an advantage in the game. Remind kids to stay focused and maintain good sportsmanship while serving. Encourage them to have fun and embrace the learning process. With practice and determination, they will become more proficient in serving with a forehand and enhance their overall table tennis skills.
