Lesson 5 - Backhand chop (cut) – description
The backhand chop, also known as a cut, is a useful stroke in table tennis that kids can learn to add variety and control to their game. It is a defensive shot used to create backspin on the ball, making it difficult for opponents to attack aggressively. To perform a backhand chop, kids should start with a balanced and relaxed stance, standing slightly away from the table. They should hold the racket with a comfortable grip, ensuring a firm but not too tight hold. As the ball approaches, kids should focus on reading the spin and trajectory of the incoming shot.
With a smooth and controlled swing, they should contact the bottom half of the ball, aiming to brush it with an upward motion. During the backhand chop, kids should generate backspin by cutting underneath the ball. This requires a slightly closed racket face and a downward stroke. The goal is to create a low, slow, and controlled return that can disrupt their opponent's attack. Kids should focus on their footwork and body positioning to maintain balance and control throughout the shot. They should try to keep their strokes consistent and controlled, adjusting the amount of backspin based on the speed and spin of the incoming ball. To develop their backhand chop, kids can practice against a partner or against a wall, focusing on precision and spin.
They should start with slower shots, gradually increasing the intensity and spin as they improve their technique.Encourage kids to experiment with different ball placements and angles, allowing them to vary their backhand chops and keep their opponents guessing. Remind them to maintain patience and focus, as it may take time to master this stroke.By learning the backhand chop, kids can become more proficient in defensive play and gain an advantage in longer rallies.
With practice and determination, they will develop the skills needed to control the game and handle different playing styles. Remember to emphasize the importance of sportsmanship and fair play, encouraging kids to enjoy the learning process and have fun while playing table tennis.
